Policymakers
Here are ways you can help strengthen education in Louisiana:
- Push for Increased Standards and Performance – In order to effectively compete globally, Louisiana's students must be exposed to more rigorous and more relevant curriculum. We must challenge them to meet increased achievement standards, graduate high school, and go on to succeed in postsecondary education. You are an important force in moving Louisiana in this direction.
- Support Programs and Policies Benefitting Education – As new education-related programs and policies are introduced for your consideration, ask yourself if they are in the best interest of Louisiana's students and their long-term success. Support policies and programs that help raise the bar and move Louisiana students closer to being prepared to succeed in postsecondary education and in the workforce. Support the guiding principles of a definition of school readiness recommended by the Stakeholder Council of Education's Next Horizon in the "Defining School Readiness Survey." Listen to what Louisiana's school superintendents are saying about education policy and programs in the "Listening Sessions" report published by Education's Next Horizon. Work to address the questions at the end of each section of the "Key Education Issues" report.
- Protect and Support Increased Investment in Public Education – The LA 4 early childhood initiative has consistently demonstrated high-quality results. In addition, when fully implemented, the state's Literacy for All initiative will yield great gains in student reading level. As caretakers of our state's education system, you should hold schools accountable for results, but protect and support increased investment in the entire education continuum—Early Learning, K-12, and beyond.
- Join Act Now! Louisiana – Your voice and leadership in support of education can be a powerful influence in our state. By signing up, you are pledging your support of making education the top priority in Louisiana. You will also receive ongoing communication from Education's Next Horizon to help you stay informed about current trends and issues that affect education within our state and across the nation.
