Louisiana's Promise Community Action Plans

  • "We pledge to work on the following objectives over the coming months to begin to bring our community together around a common goal of reducing the number of drop-outs and increasing our on-time graduation rate."

Louisiana's Promise continues to assist school districts in mobilizing and engaging community leaders to solve the dropout problem. The following is a listing of districts that have been assisted and the dropout prevention goals their community leaders have developed:

  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Improve the effectiveness of DEWS.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Reduce the truancy rate for unexcused absences to zero.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    Better prepare students for post-secondary options and career opportunities.

    Local Community Ideas & Objectives
    - Build public awareness and support for dropout prevention efforts.

     

  •  City of Baker School System
  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Increase the effectiveness of Early Warning.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Ensure that 100% of students attend school all the time.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    - Ensure that courses integrate technology and 21st Century skills at all grade levels.

    Local Community Ideas & Objectives
    - Increase collaboration with city and parish officials, community organizations, and local businesses to develop student support services.
    - Keep the graduation rate issue at the forefront of all district planning and “top of mind” in the Baker Community.

     

  •  Catahoula Parish School District
  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Improve the administration of the dropout early warning system.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Maintain zero (0) unexcused absences.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    - Better prepare students for College (Post-Secondary) and Career Readiness.

    Local Community Ideas & Community
    - Continuously communicate and promote dropout prevention efforts on a district-wide basis.

     

  •  Iberville Parish Schools
  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Maintain and expand current school-to-work programs.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Fully implement existing policies and amend district policy to allow and mandate make-up hours.

    - Better prepare students for post-secondary options and career opportunities.

    - Build public awareness and support for dropout prevention efforts.

     

  •  Madison Parish Schools
  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Develop appropriate support and intervention strategies for Pre-GED/Options and overage students.
    - Develop appropriate support and intervention strategies for K-8 students who are at-risk of dropping out.

    - Prepare students for post-secondary and career options.

    Local Community Ideas & Objectives
    - Build community trust in the Madison Parish School system.

     

  •  Monroe City Schools
  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Develop procedures and guidelines to ensure that DEWS is administered efficiently and effectively.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Achieve a 2% truancy rate and 98% attendance rate by 2014.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    - Expose students to career and post-secondary options and prepare students to be college (two and four year options) and career ready.

     

  •  Morehouse Parish Schools
  • Truancy and Attendance
    - Annually reduce the number of students listed on the DEWS Report/Students Statistical Report (SSR) by 25%.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    - Starting at middle school, develop ways to better engage students in “relevant” learning opportunities.

  • Early Detection & Community Support Systems
    - Significantly improve the district’s early detection, support and intervention services for PreK-8 grade students.

    Truancy and Attendance
    - Improve efficiency and effectiveness of Family in Need of Services (FINS).
    - Develop written procedures of the truancy policy and communicate them system-wide and to parents.

    Connecting Schools to the Future
    - Develop and sustain a mentoring program.
    - Explore expanding Career & Technical Education courses.
    - Better inform teachers and parents about career and post-secondary options.
    - Better inform students about the impact of dropping out.

    - Build community partnership and ownership of the school system.
