According to the National Center on Education Statistics (NCES), the percentage of children ages 5-16 living in poverty in Louisiana is 23.9% -- the highest in the country and almost 1.4 times the percentage of all American children living in poverty (17.4%). This, coupled with factors such as high dropout rates and high adult literacy, makes our challenge difficult. The positive results of Louisiana's LA 4 Pre-Kindergarten program prove that high quality Pre-K education helps all children prepare for school – especially children living in poverty. We must do a better job of ensuring that our children, families, schools and communities are "school ready." This begins when we all value education and make it a top priority.
